Somerville

Bustling downtown Somerville maintains most of its historical buildings, although many are now boutique specialty shops and culturally diverse restaurants. This tends to draw people from all surrounding areas. In many ways, Somerville remains Somerset County's downtown. The mix of modern amenities and an interesting and diverse past make Somerville a unique destination for dining, strolling and visiting.

History

Somerville was originally populated as a farming community, but grew into a much more desirable area once the railroad was constructed and the development of water power along the Raritan River. It grew into a thriving commercial center in 1864, which lead to it being commissioned into a town of Somerset County. Originally a town full of farming and industry has now turn into a bustling downtown of culturally diverse restaurants and unique small businesses.
